EL CAJON — An Uber driver accused of sexually assaulting a woman while on duty was arrested in El Cajon on Tuesday, police said.
John Sanchez, 52, gave the woman a ride and allegedly sexually assaulted her on Feb. 26, El Cajon police said.
The San Diego resident was booked in jail on a count of rape of a drugged person.
An Uber spokeswoman said Sanchez was suspended as a driver on Feb. 26 after police notified the ride-sharing company of the reported crime. She said he had cleared a background check.
“Uber takes safety incidents like this very seriously, and our thoughts are with the victim and her family,” the company said in a statement. “We have been working closely with law enforcement to assist their investigation."
Detectives have been investigating the case alongside the San Diego District Attorney’s Office, and they obtained warrants to search Sanchez’s home and silver 2012 Scion XB.
Detectives are trying to determine if this is an isolated incident. Police ask anyone with information to call the department at (619) 579-3311 or the Crime Stoppers anonymous tip line at (888) 580-8477.
